Chapter Twenty-Nine

Later that week, Alexa rapped her knuckles on the doorframe of Jordan’s office door. She’d had little contact with her friends after starting to see Jason, and she was leery of sharing their relationship with anyone else. Dating. We’re dating. It can’t be a bigger deal than that, but I’m terrified of jinxing it.

Jordan waved. “Come on in.”

As she crossed the wooden floor, Alexa’s yellow skirt flitted at her calves. The heels of her bright white boots clicked with each step. “Sorry I’m late. I got caught up at work.”

If she wasn’t with Jason, she was working on the fundraiser. It consumed all her time. She wanted to put on the most amazing event ever. The more donations they received, the more projects she could implement. Alexa settled into the leather seat across from Jordan and crossed her legs.

“No hurry. Griffin and I just finished a few minutes ago.”

“How’s the project going?” Alexa watched carefully to see her friend’s reaction to the question.

“Fine, but we don’t have an identified pattern yet.”

Alexa brushed a strand of hair out of her eyes. The bracelets on her wrists chimed together. “I know you. You won’t give up.”

“You’re right. We’ll figure it out. Enough talk about me and my problems. How’s the fundraiser planning going for the community center? I can’t believe you took on that project along with your administrative duties.”

“It’s going okay. I agree that it’s an extra workload but doing it myself will save us money. The more money we make through the event, the more opportunities for the kids.”

“Are the board members more open to your ideas?”

Lord, it’s been too long since we caught up. “It’s going great. Jason finally stood up to his girlfriend.” Ex-girlfriend. “Every idea I came up with, she was opposed to. I was about to pull out my hair.”

“Is she worried you’re going to steal him away?”

Shit. If I say they’ve broken up, I’m going to get twenty questions. I’m not ready to share my feelings about him with anyone else.

Alexa tightened her lips together and stared at Jordan from under her long lashes. “Hardly. He’s a trust fund baby. He doesn’t know what it means to go without.” She shrugged. “He’s not the kind of guy that would be interested in me.”

“So?” Jordan shrugged. “You could teach him.”

“How do you teach someone who’s always had it all what it’s like to never get what you want? To have to worry about where your next meal is coming from. To fear your electricity being shut off in the middle of winter.” Those were things that Jason had never faced and likely never would. These situations had been her experiences more than once. Could we ever really fit together?

Jordan leaned back in her chair and crossed her arms. “You have the resources if he’s worth it.”

“What do you mean?”

“You volunteer at a charity for children in need. You should take him around the kids. Let him hear their stories.”

“And then what?”

“Maybe he’s not as insensitive as you think.
